Apple new CEO and Apple’s product strategy

John Ternus, Apple new CEO, wants everyone to be clear on one thing. Moreover, the iPhone isn’t going anywhere. On Wednesday, Ternus pledged his undying support for the device. This happened during his first keynote as CEO. He placed Apple’s product strategy squarely around the iPhone. That strategy focuses specifically on the AI era.

He stated, “The iPhone is the best product in the world designed to be your intelligent personal hub.” However, the Apple new CEO strategy is starkly in contrast to this approach. Cook repeatedly tried to convince Wall Street of something different. He made the case that Apple was more than just the iPhone. Ternus’s pitch also serves as a direct rebuttal.

Several pundits have recently cast doubt on the iPhone’s future. One headline read, ‘The smartphone’s days are numbered.’ That existential challenge for Apple new CEO is figuring out what comes after the iPhone. However, there is more to this than just hardware specifications. Moreover, the iPhone is at the center of Ternus’s larger vision.

The Apple new CEO strategy centers on an intelligent personal assistant. The company’s future may be shaped by this vision. Notably, Steve Jobs carried out something akin in 2001. That took place with the Mac less than ten months before the iPod’s announcement.

At the time, many observers were of the opinion that the PC’s time had come. Jobs responded directly during a keynote address at Macworld New York. He criticized analysts’ bearish statements. That included Compaq and Gateway executives in addition to Walt Mossberg.

“This is what everyone else is telling us. That our PC is waning, if not the hole being dug,” Jobs said at the time. He pointed at a tombstone for the “Beloved PC” displayed behind him. “We don’t think the PC is dying at all. The PC does not appear to be deviating from the center, in our opinion. We think it’s evolving, just like it has since it was invented.”

Jobs continued, “We think the PC is on the threshold of entering its third great age.” At the time, a growing number of digital devices prompted this prediction. That included camcorders, digital cameras, and DVD players.
What Jobs would refer to as a “digital hub” would center on the Mac.

This concept would connect these disparate devices. It would, in Jobs’ words, “add value” to all of them. Jobs unveiled the iPod during a presentation later that year. This device seemed designed to answer a specific question. “Why do you still need a PC?” The iPod proved to be a huge success. It was the driving force behind Apple’s quarterly profits. In the end, it contributed to the creation of the iPhone.

The iPhone is getting close to its 20th birthday right now. Ternus now faces a version of the same question Jobs tackled back in 2001. It’s not clear whether Ternus is quietly working on a product similar to the iPod. Such a device could secure the iPhone’s position as Apple’s hub for years to come. Nevertheless, he is firmly rejecting the notion that the iPhone is past its prime.

“If you were designing the ideal version of this hub from scratch, how would you do it?” Ternus inquired. He then went over the primary components. This includes an efficient processor. It includes high-resolution cameras. On-device AI and persistent networking are also included.

The iPhone’s continued status as one of the most powerful personal computers available is advantageous. This gives it a real edge during the compute-hungry AI era. Its portability and adaptability make it something significant for many people. It’s the only computer they really need for them. Even among iPad and laptop owners, the iPhone frequently stands out.

It’s frequently the one device people can’t live without. Plenty of people leave home without their laptops. Almost no one leaves home without their phone.
Apple occupies a truly privileged position in the AI industry as a result of this combination of power and portability. Other companies have tried unseating the iPhone with various wearable devices. So far, none of these attempts have been successful. Ternus is leaning into the iPhone rather than ignoring it in favor of the next flashy product.

He is, in a way, convincing Apple of a fact that many people already hold. The iPhone remains genuinely great. Perhaps there’s no need to replace it with something else. At least, not yet.
