Sonnet 5.5 Arrives: Anthropic Bets on Speed and Savings

The race among AI labs shows no sign of slowing. Anthropic has just unveiled Sonnet 5.5, the latest update to its mid-tier model family. The company says the new release is noticeably quicker than what came before and comes with a lower price tag.

From cost-savings to speed

Sonnet 5 debuted roughly three months ago, and its headline feature was affordable agent deployment, letting teams run AI agents for less than rival offerings. This time, the emphasis has moved to performance. Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 is 30% faster than its predecessor and uses far fewer tokens to get its work done.

Small but nimble

In Anthropic’s lineup, Sonnet ranks beneath the Opus model when it comes to raw capability. Even so, its agility can make it the smarter pick for certain jobs. Anthropic’s own benchmarks back this up: on agentic coding tasks, Sonnet 5.5 outperforms Opus 5.5. The likely reason is that Sonnet can run several agents at once while staying within budget.

Stronger cyber skills, tighter safeguards

Anthropic also says Sonnet 5.5’s cyber capabilities are “comparable” to those of Opus 5. That is a first for the Sonnet family, and it comes with a new requirement: Sonnet 5.5 is the first model in the line to fall under the same cyber safeguards already applied to Fable and Opus.

Haiku is next

A new version of Haiku, Anthropic’s smallest model, is also on the way. The company hasn’t committed to a date, but it’s expected within the next few weeks.

A crowded field

The industry has seen a wave of model launches over the past year, and the big labs have been busy lately. Just last week, OpenAI rolled out several new models, including upgraded versions of Sol and Luna, its mid-tier and budget-friendly options. Meta has also announced a new model, which the company says will power an upcoming feature for its smart glasses.
